🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Zenkichi Hasegawa
Age: 42 (Estimated age, the game mentions he is above 40, and he has a daughter who is around 14-15)
Canon: Persona 5 : Strikers
Canon Point: End of the game, 8/29/202x
Character History: Here

Canon Abilities:
INSPECTOR
Unlike, say Naoto Shirogane or even Goro Akechi, Zenkichi isn't a prodigal detective/inspector, nor is he ever presented as one in the game. Rather, he didn't get things naturally as they might have, and to compensate worked hard to keep up with his peers and eventually surpass them. It was his steady work and climbing up the ranks that lead him to where he is, and his years of experience makes him someone you can count on to get to the bottom of a situation. He is not afraid to take unconventional methods, such as when he literally presented himself to the Phantom Thieves as a potential ally instead of trying to stalk them like everyone else had been doing (I mean he was stalking them too, but he was very upfront about it). He's also pretty good at judging a character's personality just by interacting with them for a short while.

Zenkichi also has some keen detective senses, considering that he was able to spot situations that were amiss during his adventures with the Phantom Thieves and save them from being attacked by a brainwashed mob at one point. While he was used as a mouthpiece for the plot at times to explain what was happening, it is presented as him doing the research and his job, so he's very knowledgeable too.

FIGHTING
While most of his fighting abilities are only when he becomes a Phantom Thief, his work in the Public Sector as an Inspector has given Zenkichi enough skills to be able to easily punch a drunken office worker down to the ground in 'self defence' if need be. During his required police training, he picked Kendo as his fighting discipline (the Japanese police force require either Kendo or Judo for all police members as part of their training) as he already had practised Judo as a teenager and figured he might as well go for a full set.

However it is when he becomes a Phantom Thief that his instincts kick into overdrive. He can move as fast as (quoted by the other Phantom Thieves) "someone half his age", jumping with surprising dexterity and finesse. He also holds a sword that is longer than himself with a single hand along with a pair of pistols.

PERSONA USER
Able to wield the power of his other self, Zenkichi is the oldest member of the Phantom Thieves (but don't call him gramps), and like the rest of his teammates, not only gets a spiffy outfit, but also goes by a codename: Wolf. His persona is Valjean, based on the character Jean Valjean of the play Les Misérables.

Valjean's abilities are listed here.

Zenkichi's Arcana is the Apostle, presented as an alternate deck (Crowley's) version of the Hierophant that focuses more in the interpretation of the rules/law and compassion compared to the Hierophant's strict rigidity of them.

Inventory:
- His typical outfit (Black suit, blue undershirt, black tie, glasses and white shoes)
- His badge & police ID
- His phone (not working)
- His wallet that includes a picture of his wife and his tween

INVENTORY (AS A PHANTOM THIEF ONLY)
- His Phantom Thief Outfit that is totally not a ripoff of a french movie (but it looks badass as hell)
- His dual pistols
- His extra-ass long sword that he wields with one hand

🦋 Personality

  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. If Zenkichi had any child-like wonder about shinto spirits or the like, they all vanished the day his wife died and he realized how deep the rabbit hole of corruption went on in his workplace. If there was some magic in the world, he certainly didn't believe in it or wanted to.

At least, until the whole Phantom Thieves incidents started to gain notoriety among his peers, and he slowly worked until he was part of the team assigned to look into it, after Shido's change of heart. Even then, Zenkichi didn't really think the Phantom Thieves used magic, or travelled palaces or jails; rather that they were actually something related to scientific research or some other modus operandi. His reaction being taken to a Jail and learning about magic and a new reality was pathetically predictable; a meltdown as his brain tried to adjust with the Cognitive world. The Phantom Thieves watched on in amusement as he talked to himself for a bit before they mercifully took him back into the 'real world'. Even as he left a short while later after speaking to them and realizing he could now understand Morgana, he was still mumbling about possibility having gone insane.

Needless to say by the time he ended up a Phantom Thief, Zenkichi understood that magic or whatever passed as magic for a Persona User could be a tool used to aid others and fight for justice. Magic, to him, is like a knife. In the right hands, it can do great things, but there are those who don't have the maturity to use it, or worst, deadly in the hands of those who would abuse it to cause harm.

  3. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being?

  4. Kapre because he looks unshaven and he likes smoking okay no

This feels a little like cheating because his code name as a Phantom Thief is Wolf, but either the Werewolf or Loup-Garou (since both are listed in the bestiary) which seems to fit his whole aesthetic of being the loner wolf who protects others (at least when it comes to the Werewolf who don't seem to attack family) instead of the dog who follows orders. A grim would fit him as well, with its solitary nature and being met at crossroads, with the implication that he would serve as a scary big doggy guide. This fits his personality as well; due to his appearance, and to overall comedic effect, he may appear frightening to those who first see him. After all, instead of trying to look dignified as an officer of the law as usual Japanese society dictates, he seems a little 'off' (his white shoes against his black outfit, his long hair and goatee). For these reasons, even when he's trying to help, he might send children crying away thinking he's a bad guy.

Thematically, if HE didn't have to chose, and one was bestowed on him, the Fury would fit him due to the fact it attacks people who were unpunished by human law. Even if he'd have to become a woman. At his core before those two years and now, Zenkichi strives for Justice. After his awakening as a Persona user, he understands he must 'condemn evil' and that a truly evil person is one who has no compassion for the others that they harm and use to get their way. Compared to the other Phantom Thieves are who younger than him, he has a more balanced view of understanding the Jail owners as well. While they all have traumatic events which caused them to change, he also acknowledges that what happened in the past can't also completely excuse how they acted in the present and arrests them accordingly. He can show sympathy, but will still apply the law as necessary.

What he'd hate becoming, however is a Tiyanak. From being called gramps to being a hell baby or worst (gasp!) being bald just to it can maul others. It feels like a loss of Self. Is there anything more pathetic than that? He thinks not.

  5. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  6. That would be an easy one; bring his wife back. True, he'd be nearly two years older than she'd remember him, but the truth of the matter is, even with having giving her justice for her death, Zenkichi would give anything to get her back. It's a very selfish wish and he knows it, but he feels his wife was the heart and soul of their family, and he lost a large part of himself when she died - even worse that she died unfairly to a drunk driver (who just happened to be one of the close hands to Shido).

Yes, Zenkichi has grown by helping the Phantom Thieves and also has changed himself with the events of the summer he met them. Regardless, if he'd be granted this wish now, yesterday or even ten or twenty years down the line, it would always be the same. At the very least, he'd want to give her a proper goodbye since he never got to do that either. He needs a good cry.

  7. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  8. Tenacity. He's definitely thick-headed. Considering the unfairness that life had thrown at him for the past few years before he was able to change it around with the Phantom Thieves, most would have easily been broken by the string of fates he was forced to endure at the hands of corrupt officials. He gets the Phantom Thieves to trust him, despite being part of the police force. He manages to go into a jail alone without a Persona (with Futaba/Navi's help) in order to help the captured Phantom Thieves and his daughter despite the fact he could die in the attempt. He even asks back for his badge from his boss after his arrest (and release thanks to Sae's help) since he is certain he will be able to get results and finally get the conviction they've been fighting for the past few years.

However this is certainly not just a positive trait, as his own Persona and daughter tell him outright that he ignored the agony of others in order to keep his family safe. He buried himself in his work, doing his best to keep his chin down and aid his boss to climb the ranks, since she had promised him that they'd be able pin Owada and the corrupt officials. His daughter endlessly berated and ignored him, and it's hinted that he drank (as most Japanese businessmen do) and came home late often. Thankfully this is mostly in the past, due to the power of friendship (TM), the words of his daughter's shadow and the Phantom Thieves themselves, but it is important to mention since it has been a week and a half since he's moved on past this and returned to his original convictions. There's still a bit of rust to him, so to speak.
